Summary 2. Annual Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Discharges and Average Burnup and Enrichment, 1968-2022

Quick Guide: Users can select various options using the selection drop-down menu, including:

  1. Number of discharged assemblies
  2. Metric tons of initial heavy metal (MTiHM) of discharged assemblies
  3. Average burnup (GWDt/MTU) of discharged assemblies
  4. Average initial enrichment (Weight % U-235) of discharged assemblies
  5. Cumulative total number of discharged assemblies
  6. Cumulative total metric tons of initial heavy metal (MTiHM) of discharged assemblies

The selected option (e.g., number of assemblies) is displayed as a function of discharge year. The initial plot presents 1968-2022 data using a five-year interval, and users can click on the plot to drill down to intermediate years. The reset button can be used to reinstate the five-year interval plot. Users can filter the data to show information between specific discharge years using "From Year" and "To Year" which will be displayed in intervals based on the number of years selected. Additionally, users can toggle between BWR, PWR, and, in some cases, Total. The first four selection options provide annual data for each year displayed, and the last two provide cumulative data from 1968 through each year displayed. The download option allows users to collectively download data for all selection options and all discharge years.

Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Nuclear Fuel Data Survey data collected using EIA Form GC-859 through 2022.

Notes: A number of assemblies discharged before 1972, which were reprocessed, are not included in the data (no GC-859 data are available for assemblies reprocessed before 1972). The data shows only assemblies reported on Form GC-859. MTiHM values reflect initial uranium mass. Totals may not equal sum of components because of independent rounding.
